Last night’s Vice Presidential debate took place at the Washington University Field House, a site that has hosted a presidential debate in each election since 1992. It is great venue to take in a college sports event, and Washington’s teams have had remarkable success on their home floor. Wash U’s volleyball team has had an amazing run of success, including nine Division III national championships since 1989 with the most recent coming in 2007. Additionally, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have won five combined national championships in the last decade. The women’s squad won four consecutive titles from 1998-2001, while the men’s team took home the crown this past season.
Debate moderator Gwen Ifill recently broke her ankle, so the only way she could get on stage was courtesy of two Wash U football student-athletes - Buck Smith and Tim Taylor. Too bad we didn’t see this on television.

Ashley Harkleroad, who is the 61st-ranked women’s tennis player in the world , will appear in the August edition of Playboy Magazine.
