Vodafone, the largest mobile network operator in Europe, has announced the acquisition of ZYB, a company based in Denmark with an eye on content backup as well as social networking. Vodafone intends to add ZYB to its “Total Communications” strategy, in which it seeks to serve customers with an integrated mobile phone and PC experience.The purchase price is reported as 31 million euros, or 48.65 million dollars.
We first mentioned ZYB as it was expanding its business model to encompass items other information storage in the cloud. At that point it seemed to be finding its place among Web services devoted to mobile users whilst maintaining connections to users’ primary information portals: their desktop and laptop computers and full-fledged social networks.

Demand Media, a big buyer and operator of Internet domain name companies, completed negotiations to acquire Austin-based Pluck last night after about two months of negotiations. The price is not being disclosed but is rumored to be in the $50 million range. Update: We’ve confirmed the number from an inside source - $75 million, all cash. Pluck revenues are around $10 million/year.

Facebook has announced the hiring of Sheryl Sandberg, previously Google’s Vice President of Global Online Sales & Operations, as COO. Sandberg will start at Facebook March 24.
Sandberg spent six years at Google where she built and managed Google’s online sales channels for both AdWords and AdSense. Prior to Google, Sandberg was Chief of Staff to the U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton.

Microsoft opened up the beta of its Office Live Workspace to all comers today. The service, which is a hosted version of Sharepoint, is designed to let you share Office documents and sync edits. It does provide a decent (if crippled) Web-based word processor, but for the most part it forces you to use Microsoft’s desktop software to create all of your documents.
