The NY Times and others broke this story with accompanying documents, although I had heard of this as long ago as perhaps a year or so, on NPR’s Fresh Air or a similar radio program. Basically, the story is that the US was and is using interrogation/torture techniques lifted from old communist manuals — even though the US has postured as more civilized, humane, etc., than those old thugs. We were morally superior to their brutish and uncouth ways, if you’ll recall. Here is a screen shot of a page from one of the manuals used by US interrogators, courtesy of PDF documents made available at the New York Times website . Some of these techniques I recognize from some interpersonal relationships I’ve had! Second in my series of “ band/musician interviews that were on this site, but that Wordpress ate one day “ : An interview with Alicja Trout . It’s an understatement to say that Ms. Trout keeps herself busy with music. She’s had her hands in all kinds of important rock ‘n roll, garage punk, and other projects from her home base of Memphis, Tennessee for at least the past decade. (Including a bit in the planned resurrection of Arthur Lee’s classic 60s... more

Interview with Under Pressure

Post Date: 2008-06-10 15:30:45

Note: This is one of several band interview posts I’m re-posting, as Wordpress (or something) decided to eat quite a few entries from the past. Criminally, this interview was one of the posts Wordpress decided to 86. Luckily, I had let David Koenig use it for his Quickfix PDF zine , so I was able to retrieve it from a copy of that. The graphics are David’s but the interview is by myself, from 2006, shortly after Under Pressure had released Come Clean . Since then they&... more
