What do you expect from a band from Detroit? Either a rough, rocking edge or smooth Motown soul, right? How about bright indie pop? No? Well then you’ll be surprised by the Motor City’s Woodward, because they bring slick synths along with their electric guitars yet don’t have backup singers in coordinated outfits.
J.P. Zammit and Dan Karmel were childhood friends with a dream to someday start a band. Once they hooked up with keyboardist Steve Hull and drummer Dave Tilove their band was finally a reality. Showing the pride they have for their home city, they named themselves Woodward after a major street in Detriot. With a full band and a name locals could relate to, the stage was set for Woodward to take Detroit by storm.

I had the opportunity to see The Godfather of Geek Rock, Jonathan Coulton, live in concert last night at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. Coulton lived up to his nickname, playing Don Corleone to a sold out crowd of geeks both young and old. His witty banter helped string together songs with topics as diverse as maniacal evil geniuses in love, the noisy solace of a Shop Vac, how zombitude affects office politics, and the romantic difficulties caused by a futuristic robot war.
