Gas prices in the United States have been steadily dropping since the middle of July, down about 30 cents to a nationwide average of $3.82. This downturn, which comes after five months of sharp increases, has left consumers both puzzled and relieved. The big question now is, “What brought about this mid-summer reprieve?” The answers range from the ridiculous to the unobservant to the sublime.
Let’s start with the ridiculous. House Republicans such as John Shadegg of Arizona are saying that their incessant clamor for offshore drilling somehow deserves the credit: “Markets respond. The market is responding to the fact that we’re here talking.”
