MacDara reports that Irish expats in Beirut have done what all groups of concerned citizens in Lebanon do in times of crisis and have formed a militia : …this has led to more drinking and we did set up an evacuation committee to prepare for skipping the country if the situation got really bad. During last nights meeting someone asked the question , How would we defend ourselves prior to evacuation? The answer came form a Lebanese Man sitting in the Corner. Set up you own militia. He claimed that because everyone has a gun in Lebanon it was only prudent that we arm ourselves. Yes but where would us bunch of paddy’s get guns we asked. I’ll be back in a Jiffy he answered. And so is was that half an hour later at an undisclosed location the Irish Militia of Beirut and suburbs was formed and the first training session commenced. The Irish militia in Beirut. I have to fill my car this evening as tomorrow we head for Cardiff. It will be pricey now that €1.26 per litre is the norm for car juice these days. Still it will be cheaper than the UK. But I do have to lauch at the ‘Mericans that whinge about their petrol prices. This is what they pay where: US Petrol prices. Hmmm, the most expensive (in California) is > $4.03 per US Gallon. That works out to €2.56 for 3.8 litres. Or 67c. Half our price. What a load of whingers. ... more

I was chatting to a Scottish colleague who lives in Sweden yesterday about the Eurovision qualifiers. I didn’t bother watching them as the contest holds zero interest for me, but he had. I said a few things which boiled down to: Simplified, integrated ticketing - Can we have zones and tickets that are reusable across different modes of transport (i.e. jump from Luas to bus to Dart). And it doesn’t require an expensive electronic ticketing system. In Munich and Stockholm I use a paper strip of card that is franked by hand or a machine. The guys making space mission promo videos seem to be getting more of their training in Hollywood these days. This is the one for the Pheonix mission to Mars.
