So the SQL Server guy stops by and says, "Hey, we want to create some reports of Notes data and we only know how to use SQL Server to do it. Do you mind exporting it to a delimited text file and saving it to this restricted folder on the file server? Here’s the username and password of a special Windows account with rights to the folder. Oh, and we need it to run on a scheduled basis so everything is automated. Thanks!" So I think, "Gee, dumping Notes data to a text file...piece of cake. Saving that file somewhere...yeah whatever. Run the export on a schedule...no problem since Domino has scheduled agents. Save the file to a *restricted* folder on the file server...with a different set of credentials...uh, I don’t think so." At this point I figure we just need to give the Windows machine on which the Domino server resides access to said restricted directory, since after all it is the server doing the work. I’ve never considered the need to output a file...

DC IBM/Lotus User Group Meeting Today
From: lotusguru.com
Post Date: 2006-05-11 00:00:00

In addition to the main presentation that IBM will be making on Workplace Forms, I will tonight also be kicking off what may turn into a regular DCNUG feature.  After last month’s meeting where Jack, Allison, Sean (Phigment), and I gave short presentations on "overhauling an old Notes App", it became abundantly evident that I like to talk about Notes.  Good thing for Lotus Folk, not so good for my wife!  Jack  Dausman at least seems to think my extemporaneous outpourings on va... more

Here are the details: Thursday Night, 6:30 to 8:00 The June 8th DC Lotus User Group Meeting !! Lots of free stuff: CDs, Magazines, and T-Shirts. Be sure to register by sending... more
Finally Joining the Skype Revolution
From: lotusguru.com
Post Date: 2006-06-08 00:00:00

It took a visit from my non-techie Canadian friend Sean to finally get the whole Skype internet phone calling thing figured out.  In about five minutes we had downloaded the Skype client (www.Skype.com), installed it, registered my username, and called Sean’s mother outside Toronto (on her regular phone) using just the built-in speaker/mic of my Thinkpad T42.  The sound quality was amazing, and is even better for Skype to Skype (i.e. Computer-To-Computer calls).  Sk... more
Calling Lotusscript from Javascript for OpenLog

Post Date: 2006-06-08 21:00:00

Much has been said recently regarding Julian Robichaux’s excellent error and event logging tool Openlog.  I gave a brief overview of it at last night’s DC Lotus User Group meeting, showing just how easy it is to implement.  It was even featured on a recent Taking Notes podcast by Julian and Buce Elgort.   Since I deployed OpenLog on a recent project working with Domino Document Manager, I had to figure out how to log events that could only be triggered by javascri... more
