Virginia : Unpopular Republican former Gov. Jim Gilmore barely squeaked by State Delegate Bob Marshall at the VA-GOP convention today, winning the Republican nomination 50.3 to 49.7 , a 66-vote victory out of more than 10,000 votes.  This is the best case scenario.  A victory by Marshall would have rallied conservatives in Virginia.  A squeak-by win for Gilmore both embarrasses him that he almost lost to a weaker-funded, lower-profile challenger and ensures that Virginia conservatives will be deflated by a ticket topped by John McCain and Gilmore.  Meanwhile, popular former Governor Mark Warner has released his first ad that draws a direct distinction between Gilmore (who left office with Virginia’s biggest budget deficit ever) and Warner (who cleaned up Gilmore’s mess): Showing how weak Gilmore’s support is among his own Party, with Marshall bashing Gilmore from the right and Tom Davis bashing Gilmore...
