This blog isn’t really about politics, but a recent statement about Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin struck me. Apparently, she doesn’t need foreign policy experience because Alaska is so close to Russia, with variations on the theme citing from seventy to 300 miles or so. Without even addressing the validity of that logic to begin with, it got me thinking - just how far is Anchorage from Moscow, where the real seat of Russian power lies? The answer to that (and any distance questions) is here , at the Distance Calculator. Apparently, Anchorage is about 4,350 miles from Moscow, only about four hundred miles closer than Philadelphia, where I’m writing this. I guess that means I’m almost qualified to be vice president. The Drudge report had a different take on this line of argument, but either way the distance calculator is kind of a cool tool. image in the public domain, from nationalatlas.gov Share This

International product launches

Generally speaking, there are four different go-to-market strategies for launching products internationally: with a global product that meets the needs of all markets, by changing the product to meet the needs of many international markets, by adapting the product to local market needs and by translating the product and/or documentation into the new market languages. The easiest way to remember the four methods is with the acronym GILT: Globalization Internationalization Localization Tra... more
I assume …

Assumptions are an interesting thing. On one hand, they are an important part of living efficiently - I assume that my car will start in the morning and most times it does, so I don’t waste a whole lot of time thinking about how I’m getting to work. Indeed, our entire existance as humans is based on certain assumptions that we use to get through our day. When those assumptions are proven incorrect, we react within fairly clearly defined parameters and then move on. That̵... more

Bill Bryson is my all-time favorite travel writer; no, he is my all time favorite writer. Born in Iowa, Mr. Bryson lived for many years in the UK and has travelled extensively. He has written books about travelling through the UK, the US, Europe, Africa and Australia. He has hiked the Appalachian Trail and written about it. He has written books about the English language, about the history of science and about Shakespeare. His travel books are witty to the point where you laugh out loud and... more
Another Mistake Monday

In a previous post, I wrote about how I like to take small gifts, especially chocolate, to my hosts when I go on long-distance trips. Everybody likes chocolate, right? A few years ago, I was on business in Malaysia. Before I went, I read up a little on the country. I learned that the country has a mixed race population and is mostly Islamic. I think to myself, “no alcohol, just to be safe” and proceed to buy some nice big bars of chocolate to take with me. To say the least, I wa... more
