Last month, The Guardian published a profile of Seymour Hersh , probably the greatest investigative journalist ever. While he’s famous for singlehandedly exposing the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War, he’s done other stuff ever since and still keeps on reeling in sources day after day. His secret? Focus on getting lower-level sources instead of spending your time wining and dining higher-ups who will often just give you self-serving half-truths. The problem is that Hersh is 71 ... more

Rachel Cooke in the Guardian. The man who knows too much After we finish breakfast, he takes me to the office. He is eager to put off the moment when he must get on with his Syria piece. The more time he wastes with me… well, the morning will soon be over. Inside he points out a few choice interior-design details — the Pulitzer (it nestles among dozens of other awards), the framed memo from Lawrence Eagleburger and Robert McCloskey to Henry Kissinger, their boss at the ... more

He exposed the My Lai massacre, revealed Nixon’s secret bombing of Cambodia and has hounded Bush and Cheney over the abuse of prisoners in Abu Ghraib... On The Woodpecker this week, we focus on three issues that are grabbing headlines (or at least our attention).  In the first half, we discuss “net neutrality” and the effort by Congressman Ed Markey  and other Democrats to introduce legislation that would keep ISPs and telco companies from charging users and content-providers for “preferred access” to bandwidth.  The companies that provide your access to the Internet would very much like to classify the websites you visit ... more
