Researchers Didier Sornette and Ryan Woodard of ETH Zurich in Switzerland and Wei-Xing Zhou of the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai, China think so :
In their analysis, the team gathered data on oil prices since 2005 in US dollars, euros, and other major currencies (to confirm that the results are not a consequence of the weakening of the US dollar). They also examined worldwide oil supply and demand data, specifically investigating the extent of increased demand from emerging markets such as China and India.
Then, the researchers analyzed this data using a method that Sornette’s group started to develop in 1996 that identifies bubbles as “transient superexponential regimes” – basically, areas of rapid growth that occur due to a source of positive feedback within the system. The scientists looked at the data in the context of three different models, and all three models revealed the existence of a “log-periodic power law,” in mathe...

Relying On the Chinese Either WayFrom: feeds.feedburner.com

When I read about the Chinese government’s big (more than half-trillion-dollar) plans for fiscal stimulus a few days ago, I wondered what this encouraging of Chinese consumption would do to their desire to invest in our Treasuries–i.e., that large credit line China’s been providing to the U.S. government all these years. We’re used to relying on Chinese saving to fund our consumption; now it seems China wants to fund some consumption of their own.

Okay, I was late to the party on this one but it is worth it. In fact I need to ask those friends of mine who do drugs if this is what a “trip” is like.
Here is how To the Point describes it.
Back in the days of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Red Army had an official choir composed of male soldiers and musicians. It still exists. The Red Army Choir performs throughout Russia to this day.
Now consider the Finnish rock band called The Leningrad Cowboys. A little while ag...

Newsweek.com Introduces Virtual “Cop-a-Feel” EditionFrom: feeds.feedburner.com

No other way to describe this other than as a brilliant, yet somewhat uncharacteristic, marketing tool to increase Newsweek’s readership with the male 13-19 demographic.
It is a Flash application which allows the (adolescent male) user to move the bra straps around and watch the resulting giggle. It is far from titillating, but much to the joy of middle school males Newsweek is not going to be blocked on library computers.
