Barack Obama is headed to Hawaii on vacation. He deserves a break, right? Besides, it’s a summer tradition. Apparently not, at least according to his opponent. A spokesman for John McCain just remarked, “Americans are facing sky-high gas prices, and instead of Barack Obama taking the initiative to call his allies in Congress back from vacation to carve out real energy relief, he’s joining them at the beach.” And to think, on our 2008 U.S. Presidential Candidate Travel Scorecard, we gave McCain a whopping four-and-a-half Air Force Ones out of five. I, for one, now regret that. I know times are tough, but we Americans must stand firm in support of vacations. Photo by http2007 via Flickr, (Creative Commons).

Matt Cooper (Portfolio.com) submits: J. Jennings Moss reports: Remember Charles Keating? Barack Obama’s presidential campaign hopes so. But just in case you don’t, the campaign today released a 13-minute online documentary about the poster child for the savings and loan crisis of nearly 20 years ago, and of John McCain’s involvement in it. The video, "Keating Economics: John McCain and the Making of a Financial Crisis", was posted on a special minisite, Kea...
As Obama Blasts McCain On Keating Five His Campaign Features Another Alum Of That Scandal
From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-10-06 08:35:48

Over the weekend the Obama campaign announced that they were going to dredge up the eighteen-year-old Keating Five scandal and nail McCain on it.  The problem is that another Senator involved in Keating is out on the campaign trail stumping for Obama. John Glenn.  Yes, that John Glenn. When the astronaut made way for the Boss on the Oval, 10,000 people roared in unison, “Bruuuuce!” “You don’t get introduced by John Glenn every day,” Bruce Springsteen said, breaking into an impromp...

McCain Shifts Attack to Supreme Court
From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-10-06 14:07:11

The McCain campaign wants voters to believe "that Mr. Obama’s judgment about his associates [Rezko, Ayers, and Wright] shows that he cannot be trusted to pick justices for the Supreme Court." An ad to that effect will begin running this week. John McCain's association with Charles Keating, Phil Gramm, and a brigade of lobbyists is apparently irrelevant to McCain's judgment. At least it won't be mentioned in the advertising. Conservatives are particularly exercised that Barac...

World Hum contributors share a favorite travel-related experience from the past seven days. Jim Benning I loved the Sigur R?s documentary, Heima, which aired on Sundance Channel (and will air next week, too). Not only because I like the band’s distinctive, ethereal music, but because the film was shot in more than a dozen places around Iceland and really captures a sense of place. Check out this great trailer in a big-screen format, with its images of ice fields and empty roads,...
Dave Barry in Costa Rica: ‘A Nation Located in South or Central America, or Possibly Europe’

The Pulitzer Prize-winning funnyman has apparently figured out where it is, because he’s been blogging from Costa Rica about his travels. He’s seen lots of monkeys, and he went zip-lining, “which is a sport where the object is to look like the world’s biggest dork,” he writes. “I was very good at it.” Judge for yourself.
