News from the WSJ that HP is prepping a new smartphone based on Windows Mobile 6.1.
The phone is the latest version of H-P’s iPaq devices. H-P, which has been selling iPaq-branded devices since it acquired personal-computer maker Compaq Computer Corp. in 2002, primarily focused earlier iPaqs on businesses and typically didn’t sell them through retail stores.
Two things about this are important, first it’s going to be targeted at consumers as well as business users and it’s coming to Europe before it gets to the US.
I’ve liked HP.s 910 and think it would have done better with some wider distribution. Be interesting to see who/if HP hooks up with in the US to get this to the mass market.

One thing worth noting about Zune and the iPhone is that Microsoft has brought every Zune and iPhone along for the ride with the latest updates. I can’t stress how important this is, especially as a way of rewarding the early adopters.
Conventional wisdom says this is a bad idea. After all ,you need to support the upgrade process as well as as a negative incentive to update to new hardware. Nevertheless, providing updates like this is a best practice. It rewards the early adopters ...
