Filed under: US Elections , Politics , USC Headlines are terribly depressing these days. (Fearful that I’m part of the problem, not the solution, here are some quick, happy thoughts: kittens , Dancing Man and Just Marrieds . Enjoy.) In all seriousness, we are facing dire circumstances. Young voters like myself and my Bright Hall colleagues, I think, should be the most worried. Most recently, the National Debt Clock has run out of room to express the size of the national debt, a mere $10,150,603,734,720. How naive Seymour Durst was to think Congress could restrain itself to a $9,999,999,999 national debt! We have Farm Bills to pay for and earmarks to fund , not to mention tax breaks on children’s wooden arrows . It seems my letter on behalf of college students is still waiting to gain traction. Shoot. Neither campaign is willing to get too detailed about which election-year promises won’t be delivered, given the state of the economy and s...

The US government’s debts have ballooned so badly the National Debt Clock in New York has run out of digits to record the spiralling figure.
The digital counter marks the national debt level, but when that passed the $10 trillion point last month, the sign could not display the full amount.
The board was erected to highlight the $2.7 trillion level of debt in 1989.
The clock’s owners say two more zeros will be added, allowing the clock to record a quadrillion d... more
From The Consumerist :
Now that we’ve hit double-digit trillions, the “National Debt” clock that’s been running constantly since 1989 in New York City’s midtown can no longer properly display the total. Brian Williams says they’ve had to temporarily adjust the display while they build a new one, slated to go up next year. We’re not sure anyone should be spending money on a fancy new hi-tech clock right now—maybe they should just hang a big chalk bo... more
The times they are a changin’... The National Debt Clock here in New York City has actually run out of digits to record the growing number.
As a quick-fix, the digital dollar sign on the gigantic clock in Midtown Manhattan has been changed to the figure "1" in $10 trillion.
The debt ticker is currently around $10.2 trillion.
The Durst Organization, who maintains the digital sign, says it plans to update the ticker next year by adding two digits. That will make it capable of tra... more
The A.P. reports today that the National Debt Clock in Times Square has run out of digits.
At last check, the debt was up to $10,255,089,055,575.
Thanks Uncle Sam.
The operators of the sign, however, have cleverly turned the dollar sign into a one, buying us a few more years.
Of course, this may look bad, but it’s nothing [...]... more
As US debt exceeded $10 trillion for the first time and caused the National Debt Clock … to run out of digits!
The national debt clock, the unofficial tracker of the federal deficit maintained by the Durst Organization in New York, has reached its limits. Last month, as the national debt exceeded $10 trillion for the first time, the clock ran out of digits to record the number.
The dollar sign in the clock had to be deleted and replaced with a one to record the massive number. The cl... more

As Mayer ducked into his awaiting BMW, his bodyguard pushed a photog to the ground and then briefly grabbed him by the throat.
E! then says:

Filed under: University of Pennsylvania , Odd News In today’s "wouldn’t it be great if The Goonies were real?" news, Hurricane Ike uncovered a ship that was buried in the sand near Fort Morgan, Alabama. A part of the ship appeared in the aftermath of Hurricane Camille in 1969, which led anthropologists to originally identify the ship as the Monticello, a Civil War schrooner that crashed in 1862 during some fighting with the U.S. Navy. Much more of the hull is now visible. ... more
Filed under: Politics , Boston University Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson zipped around the Sunday talk shows this morning, saying on four different news programs that the government’s $700 billion bailout plan is the best way to save the country from financial disaster. There are lots of terms flying around these days: "bailout," "investments," "short-selling" and "oh s@!#" among them. Everyone is quick to point fingers, and whereas there was once a debate as to whether Wall Street... more
Filed under: Politics , USC , Local California Democrat Nicole Parra said yesterday she will endorse her former Republican rival , former California Highway Patrol officer Danny Gilmore, to replace her in the State Assembly, infuriating her party colleagues once again as they try to increase the Democratic Party’s stranglehold on the state legislature (which just passed the state budget a record 81 days overdue after months of partisan gridlock). Gilmore was Parra’... more
