Q: How is the media like an impatient pregnant couple just itching to decorate the nursery? A: They can't wait until election day to find out if they're having an Obama or a McCain! It's the part of elections that are most annoying -- the part toward the end where the electoral map gets continually recolored and we hear definitive declarations over who is winning. Can't we get out and rock the vote first? But we know, we know, you're curious. Here's the latest on who has pretty much cleared a path to victory: things are looking very good for Democrat Barack Obama. On "Meet the Press" yesterday, NBC's Chuck Todd said the Illinois senator is one state away from clinching the win. Of course, there's the plausible scenario that Obama and John McCain could tie, in which case the Democrat led House of Representatives would decide (though here's a baffler: the Dems might not have enough votes to give it to Obama ... If Barack Obama appoints Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State, it will send a cynical message to his supporters: that change is something they can still only hope for. Because if Obama relies on this unqualified Washington insider to fill one of the most important positions in his ‘outsider’ administration, it will represent neither change nor hope, ju... more
Starting today, Health Care for America Now is running ads in Washington, DC, reminding Congress and decision makers here in our nation’s capital exactly what happened on November 4th. Here’s the ad:
Barack Obama ran on health care, plain and simple. He repeated the message we’ve highlighted above all over this country in speech after speech. In the final month of the campaign, he signed on to Health Care for America Now’s vision for reform and spent 86% of his adv... more
It really doesn’t matter what I think about the outcome of the US presidential election but something I stumbled across as I was scanning my video collection gave me further pause for thought. I wonder how many people have seen Eugene Jarecki’s Why We Fight? a 2005 documentary that traces the rise of the US [...]... more

Someone keeps puking all over the bar, and then has the nerve to act smug about the smell. Wow, and just when Josh had come close to convincing me that Lutherans can be people too.
Richard: From that ornament description: “Commemorate John McCain’s historic choice of the first woman Vice-Presidential nominee, Sarah Palin.” Wait, was I dreaming that whole Geraldine Ferraro thing?
Tacky and stupid! Maybe I should get one for my new favorite Lutheran pastor!

What would your first assumption be if your wife got
pregnant after you’d had a vasectomy? Would you suspect her of being unfaithful—or your sperm of outsmarting your sterilization surgery? Well, unless your marriage is on the rocks or you’re
swingers (and, hey, I don’t judge!), the latter is the more likely. At least 1
percent of vasectomies fail to prevent pregnancy —just as condoms break and women on the pill get
pregnant.

The day after Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul turned down an endorsement request from John McCain's camp , he urged his supporters to vote for any of the third-party candidates who are also still in the race. Two of the four candidates he named were himself and independent candidate Ralph Nader. Wow! Are we going to see a Republican election spoiler or will the two cancel each other out? Paul disparaged the two-party system in the U.S. today speaking before the Washin... more
I used to feel like a ridiculous hippie for carrying my own bags to the store, but in the year-ish I have been doing so it's become really common, so common that now I feel shamed when I don’t bring them. Some stores around here even give you a little discount -- 5 cents or so -- based on the number of bags you bring. Makes sense to me – not only does it keep bags out of landfills but it saves the store a little money. Which is why I think Seattle's proposed &quo... more
