First we had the White House declaring that its visitor logs were classified. Now, in yet another example of the “none of your damn business” school of government, it turns out the vice president has done the same. A lawyer for Vice President Dick Cheney told the Secret Service in September to eliminate data on who visited Cheney at his official residence, a newly disclosed letter states. The Sept. 13, 2006, letter from Cheney’s lawyer says logs for Cheney’s residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory are subject to the Presidential Records Act. Such a designation prevents the public from learning who visited the vice president. Note that there is no high-minded principle involved here. The White House classified its logs to keep people from finding out how many times Jack Abramoff had visited. Cheney classified his logs to keep people from finding out how often he was visiting with leaders of the religious right. The records are prese...

Connections to Dick Cheney can make you rich, right?

Maybe, but that is not what forensic economists David Fisman, Ray Fisman, Julia Galef, and Rakesh Khurana found in their 2006 paper “Estimating the value of connections to Vice-President Cheney” [PDF]. From the abstract: We estimate the market valuation of personal ties to Richard Cheney. Our proxies for personal ties are based on corporate board linkages that are prevalent in the network sociology literature. We consider a number of distinct political and personal events... more

The Last Dick : caro : When Richard B. Cheney moves out of One Observatory Circle on January 20, it will mark the much-anticipated end to an era of man-sized safes, undisclosed locations, and vice-presidential shooting sprees. Less remarked upon is the passing of another historically significant aspect of the 67-year-old veep’s identity: His name. In all likelihood, Cheney will be the last person to occupy such an august position in American life while answering to the increasingly awkw... more

Gena Evans Maybe Gena Abraham Evans, now Georgia’s DOT commissioner, did something wrong while head of the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission.  Maybe she allowed her personal relationship with a contractor in a state construction project to cloud her judgment.  Maybe she erred by failing to disclose that relationship.  Maybe Dale Russell’s I-Team investigation into those issues hit a bulls-eye. But we predict it won’t matter, because a) those iss... more

California Marriage Records contain data on names, licenses and counties for marriage applications. All public marriage records in the state of California are kept by the California Department of Public Health Office of Vital Records. Individual counties issue confidential records pertaining to licenses that were issued out of their office. The same is true for divorce records. They will be found only in the county of which the Superior Court ordered the divorce decree. California’s law -... more

For years, like other professionals, Obama has been working all day on his BlackBerry.  But before he arrives at the White House, he will probably be forced to sign off. In addition to concerns about e-mail security, he faces the Presidential Records Act, which puts his correspondence in the official record and ultimately up for [...]... more

This article talks about how our president-elect Barack Obama will try to make the white house more technical. Apparently Obama is like most teens, addicted to his cell phone. He is not looking forward to losing it once he is sworn in. Due to the Presidential Records Act, all of his emails and correspondences are [...]... more

Don’t Test ALL Cows For Mad Cow Disease?

More twisted logic from the administration that keeps me in stitches nearly every single day. From IHT: WASHINGTON: The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease. The Agriculture Department tests fewer than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. A beef producer in the western state of Kansas, Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, wants to test all of ... more

Religious intolerance, here and abroad

Two examples of religious bigotry today, which helps illustrate the difference between individual and government discrimination. First, in New Hampshire, an idiot confronted Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney’s visit to New Hampshire started on a sour note Tuesday when a restaurant patron declared he would not vote for the Republican presidential contender because of his faith. “I’m one person who will not vote for a Mormon,” Al Michaud of Dover shouted at Romn... more
