My father in law (F.I.L.) is in town today for the party being thrown by Sgt Willie in McKee barracks. It is much deserved recognition for the work and sacrifice that thousands of Irish defence forces personnel have given in the last 50 years. As the press release said, 59,000 tours of duty on 74 missions, and 85 lives lost.
My F.I.L. started his UN service in the Congo. Ironically as he is celebrating and being recognised for his work there, his daughter is in Africa right now. In her way she is also helping to make life better for people. Although she is more concerned with mobile networks than with peacekeeping. That said for both of them Africa means loads of armed men. A text message on Tuesday from Laura said:
“We will go out to an expat bar protected by guys with ak47s tomorrow night”
It wasn’t a late night for them. Their drivers won’t work after midnight (too dangerous) so they had to be home early.
Stay safe wife!

Hmmm, the most expensive (in California) is > $4.03 per US Gallon. That works out to €2.56 for 3.8 litres. Or 67c. Half our price. What a load of whingers.

I was chatting to a Scottish colleague who lives in Sweden yesterday about the Eurovision qualifiers. I didn’t bother watching them as the contest holds zero interest for me, but he had. His independent take on Dustin’s performance was that he was funny, but dreadful. He felt is was a joke that only Irish people would get, but he was all in favour of the idea of junk acts to a junk contest. ...

The guys making space mission promo videos seem to be getting more of their training in Hollywood these days. This is the one for the Pheonix mission to Mars. Pheonix will touch down if all goes well, or crater if it doesn’t, on May 25th.
he video starts out like a trailer for a big budget film, which is appropriate considering their budget is quite a bit larger, and if they don’t get bums on seats supporting them then someone in Washington will pull the plug
