Senator John McCain has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. With Alaska’s three electoral votes fairly safe for Republicans, this choice was clearly not based on geography, but demographics and it appears that McCain is betting that the choice of Palin will help him win over unsatisfied former Hillary Clinton supporters. The choice certainly made headlines and has taken attention away from Barack Obama’s speech to the DNC. Palin is the first Alaskan to be on a major party presidential ticket and the first women to be on the republican ticket.
will update when a map showing her background becomes available….

I agree with you, Mona, and Kathryn and Bill. The Palin nomination has generated the only real enthusiasm on the Republican side and keeping her under wraps until she can mouth the appropriately nuanced platitudes isn't worth it. There's nothing to be gained by taking Miss Authenticity and turning her into a Foggy Bottom bore. Plus a gazillion interviews a day with WZZZ-AM Presque Isle, Maine would lessen the Elimination Round stakes attached to the once-a-month highwire acts with Couric... more
As Senator Biden prepares to face off against Governor Palin on Thursday night in the campaign’s lone vice presidential debate, Democratic strategists have a few words of advice for the lawmaker of Delaware: Ignore the Alaskan. Mr. Biden’s 35 years in the Senate dwarf Ms. Palin’s single month of experience on the national stage, but Democrats are worried that his penchant for verbal missteps and his occasionally aggressive style could be a liability as he faces only the second ... more
I have been under-whelmed thus far with Governor Palin’s interviews. Team McCain really needs to let her loose. We have seen that she can handle herself in debates. There is plenty of proof on you tube. What we need to see is that same fire and grasp of facts on the trail. Not ever press event will be a pep rally, it is now time to prove that the choice has merit, you were given the benefit of the doubt by the conservatives.
The total failure of the Couric interview is forgiv... more
Some thoughts on the poll above . . .
First, some assumptions.
Senator John McCain will be defeated by Senator Barack Obama by both a solid electoral and popular vote margin, although not the blowout I once expected. Barack Obama will have the psychological boost of being the first Democratic candidate since LBJ to win over 50% of the popular vote.

So as we eagerly await the big event tonight, the one question that still lingers for me is...just what will Governor Sarah Failin be wearing?? I’m thinking she goes with the red dress. Or a parka or a live seal to show her state pride. Also, I might be going out on a limb here, but I’m pretty sure this question will be where things really get out of hand: "Governor Palin, suppose one of the world’s leading scientists and your local witch doctor meet to discuss global warming.... more
