Victor Davis Hanson makes some reasonable points in his op ed urging conservatives not to "jump ship" on John McCain . On balance, I think McCain isn’t nearly as good as Hanson claims, and Obama not quite as bad. Then again, I’m not a conservative, and so not the target audience for Hanson’s column.
Be that as it may, I think Hanson’s appeal goes a bit off the rails when he concludes by suggesting that supporting McCain is like "trust[ing] the grating harsh voice of Gandalf detailing the dangers of Saruman rather than the mellifluous charm of the latter who in soothing tones outlines his own victimhood." To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen : I served with Gandalf in numerous D&D campaigns; I knew Gandalf from reading the Lord of the Rings umpteen times; Gandalf was a friend of mine. And John McCain is no Gandalf. Content suppressed by ://URLFAN, for full article visit source

VDH answers the intellectualsFrom: newpaltzjournal.com Post Date: 2008-10-29 06:52:18 I’ve called Victor Davis Hanson the most important writer in America. He has made it his business to throw historical context around the Left’s and the media’s (but I repeat myself) caricatures of reality, especially in the case of the Iraq war.
I am guilty of following his lead and borrowing his sensibility and integrating it with my own understanding of history and geopolitics.

Barack Obama’s been saying that for months, and he believes the only way to cure all of our problems is to elect him, The One. He’ll wave his magic redistribution wand and the whole world will be a better place.
But seriously, just how bad is it, really? Most people I know are doing okay. John McCain, whose presidential bid was snuffed out two weeks ago by Barack Obama, is setting up a political action committee as a first step in running for a fifth term in the Senate. A McCain spokesperson said the 72-year-old Arizona senator decided with his senior advisers tonight to set up the fundraising PAC. The spokesperson spoke anonymously because the decision had not yet been made public.... more Biden says McCain is not an agent of changeFrom: unpartisan.com Post Date: 2008-11-19 12:04:12 Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said today that Republican John McCain would need a Halloween costume to persuade voters that he would depart from the policies and divisive politics of President Bush.

John Mayer was out dining with a male friend on Tuesday night at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, where, although the private exit was ready for him, Mayer decided to leave out the front door - right into the sea of awaiting paparazzi.
As Mayer ducked into his awaiting BMW, his bodyguard pushed a photog to the ground and then briefly grabbed him by the throat.

Bresciano capitalised on a mistake from Bahrain captain Mohamed Husain in stoppage time to make the hosts pay for missing a host of earlier chances. Australia now top the group with maximum points from three games, while Bahrain have just one. Bahrain started brightly and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had to be ... more

Charlie Gibson’s Big Mistake. From: volokh.com Post Date: 2008-09-11 19:09:06 One thing I learned tonight is that neither Charlie Gibson nor anyone on his staff reads the Volokh Conspiracy (or Hot Air for that matter).
Outrageously, in his interview Gibson claimed that Sarah Palin had called the Iraq War “a task . . . from God.”
No she didn’t. She prayed that it was a task from God. As I said a few days ago:

Louisiana , a reader e-mails in with a question: Is 18 U.S.C. § 242 another federal law that also permits the death penalty for child rape? I did some quick research into the matter. To my surprise, my tentative answer is "yes." [ UPDATE: Ah, the beauty of tentative answers is how easy they are to change! Here is how it began:A well-regulated militia being essential to the security of a free state. . . ." The next time someone tells you that the militia referred to in the Second Amendment has been "superceded" by the National Guard, ask them who it was that prevented United Airlines Flight 93 from reaching its target.
