Japanese Americans (日系アメリカ人, Nikkei Amerikajin?) are Americans of Japanese heritage. Japan is a western Pacific Ocean multi-archipelagic nation east of China in Asia. Japanese Americans are a subgroup of East Asian Americans, which is further a subgroup of Asian Americans. Okinawa, a former independent nation, was annexed by Japan in the late nineteenth century. Japanese Americans have historically been among the three largest Asian American communities, but in recent decades have become the sixth largest (at roughly 1,204,205, including those of mixed-race or mixed-ethnicity). In the 2000 census, the largest Japanese American communities were in California with 394,896, Hawaii with 296,674, Washington with 56,210, New York with 45,237, and Illinois with 27,702. Each year, about 7,000 new Japanese immigrants enter United States ports, making up about 4% of i...

Currently, Curtis and Tony are making additional edits to the film to make it as moving and powerful as possible. This includes additional interviews with luminaries of the APA community, news clips of how the media covered and treated the Vincent Chin case in the early 1980s, more modern-day links (aftermath of 9/11 and the impact of the Japanese American community), etc. They have also been doing screenings throughout the country, reaching out to young people in colleges and conferences deali... more

The Lynching of Katsu Goto
One-hundred and nineteen years ago on this day in people’s history, Japanese storekeeper Katsu Goto was lynched in Hawaii. On the morning of October 29th, 1889, the body of Goto was found hanging by a rope from a telephone pole. As one of the “first ship” immigrants from Japan to the island of Hawaii, Goto worked on a sugar plantation before saving enough money to open a general store. Being fluent in both English and Japanese, he never forgot his fel... more

Toshio Tamogami
According to the Washington Post , a Japanese air force chief named Toshio Tamogami was ousted last month for saying that Japan was not an aggressor during World War II. This isn’t old news; I have friends in Japan who say that they didn’t know about Japan’s WWII history until they traveled to Australia and felt the resentment from people whose relatives had been killed. The issue, of course, is that Japan is still relatively insular, and that the Jap... more

In a landmark election that will go down the history books as a first whatever its outcome will be, Republican presidential candidate McCain has found support among Asian Americans, despite the fact that Democratic candidate Obama has a background similar to theirs. Filipino Tove Ann Purificacion of Vallejo supports McCain due to his and his running mate’s pro-life stance as one of the main factors in her support and lauds the former prisoner of war’s military service. It appears that v... more

Am I the last to know ?
This last, dainty incarnation of Zima might still be with us were it not for killjoy lawmakers in Utah and California.... MillerCoors withdrew the brand from Utah in September, after the state’s legislature passed an onerous law requiring new labels that indicate a malternative’s alcohol content in bold, all-caps letters. It didn’t make economic sense for the brewer to print Utah-only labels.
In California, meanwhile, the state’s Board of... more

Faulkner’s Gravesite American short story writer, novelist, best known for his Yoknapatawpha cycle, a comédie humaine of the American South, which started in 1929 with SARTORIS / FLAGS IN THE DUST and completed with THE MANSION in 1959. Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949. Faulkner’s style is not very easy-in this he has connections to European literary modernism. His sentences are long and hypnotic, sometimes he withholds important details, or r... more
