Today, inspired by a bit of free time while the washing machine does it’s thing I poked at rawhide. Specifically I was interested in why.. once again.. my iPod had stopped working in Banshee. The component responsible for this is Podsleuth, a neat little C# ditty which does all the magic for us.
First roadblock, the new rpm version is stricter with the fuzz so rebasing one patch was required. Then Podseluth needed to be adapted to the new sg3_utils, a simple little patch later and we now compile (many thanks to Dan Horak for pointing out my typo).
Now it still doesn’t actually run but the original 2 issues being fixed it now exposes another bug wherein it seems we cannot find HAL on dbus. This I am still trying to figure out but not at all bad for idle poking while I wait for the laundry to finish.

Remote assistanceFrom: davidnielsen.wordpress.com

Today for the first time ever I was asked to do remote assistance for a Vista machine. Which I found to be much harder than I expected, the other user sends a file with what appears to be the connection data scrambled up along with the user name and a password token. Under Vista apparently all I do is double click this.. under Linux I experience deep fail as it opens in Firefox.
Now clearly we must be able to improve on this, I am to understand we have tools to enable this but during quick ...

IBM was contracted to build a supercomputer for the Los Alamos National Laboratory which is called Roadrunner what makes it interesting to me is not that it’s a 1.7 petaflop hybrid machine that for a supercomputer falls into the green power catagory but the fact that the OS used on the whole thing is RHEL and Fedora. Looking at the list of applications for this machine it includes things like ensuring the security and relability of the US stockpile of nuclear weapons, doing accura...
more Google ChromeFrom: davidnielsen.wordpress.com

Everyone is doing it, today in the Perspective on CS lecture I noticed one thing. First one person installed Chrome, played with it for a few minutes. His neighbor would then notice, whisper quietly for a minute or so, install it and play and soon Chrome was on every single Windows machine in the room. It spread like wild fire. Now I know we are tech heads being CS students and all but I would still be interested in seeing how many people keep Chrome installed and in use. I know from the mome...
