Independence means something different to everyone, I think. It also changes throughout a person’s life.
The US declared their independence from the tyranny of England, thanks in large part to the soldiers and our leaders at that time - 232 years ago.
My mother – she declared her independence from the abuse and tyranny of her 2nd husband, thanks in large part to her courage and a little help from her parents – 35 years ago.
I declared my independence from my abusive ex – 13 years ago.
We, as a country, have helped millions of people around the world live independent lives.
We, as citizens, continue to enjoy the same form of independence that our forefathers fought for those 232 years ago and our generations to come will enjoy those same freedoms, even if we don’t necessarily AGREE with them all the time. We are allowed to. That’s independence.

I do not know how I managed to find my way to this article yesterday. I just know that when I did, I was completely in AWE of these women and the courage they are exhibiting, when so many others, so beaten down by circumstance, would understandably cower and accept what’s been handed to them.
