This week’s Time Out New York features a list of 40 New Yorkers who have made a “positive impact on the city since TONY’s been around.” While we do like many of the people on their list, we felt compelled to make a list that the Idealist community might find more inspiring. So here are the New Yorkers we’d love to interview, in no particular order. Please add more below and make our list 40 strong! Rosario Dawson: Not only is she a fab actress, but she’s done work with loads of community groups, including the Lower East Side Girls Club , PFLAG , and Voto Latino . Majora Carter: She founded Sustainable South Bronx , which combines poverty alleviation with environmental improvement—in the neighborhood and nationwide. Danny Goldfield: His project, NYChildren , aims to photograph one child from every country in the world. All of them must live in New York City. Chang-Rae Lee: The author of Native Speaker, a brilliant novel a...

Undocumented New Yorkers: Life in the Shadows
From: immigration.change.org
Post Date: 2008-12-03 08:00:00

Jeff Coplon in New York Magazine recently wrote a probing article on the psychology and daily life of undocumented migrants. It hits a little close to home.  I practiced at a small nonprofit in Brooklyn not far from Sunset Park for two years.  The profiled family could very well have come through our doors at some point. The article confirms my experience since 2007: New York City is now a city of raids and fear as much as it is a city of immigrants. "New York at one point w... more

From Rags to Reuse: The Take a Seat Project
From: idealistnyc.wordpress.com
Post Date: 2008-10-09 14:10:55

Try not to cringe. This chair can potentially relieve your aches and bunions. I’m standing on the subway platform anxiously waiting for the C train to arrive for at least 30 minutes, and my legs start to give. Tired after a long day and a late night out, I just can’t do it anymore. But the already sparse seats are taken. I look around at my options: squat against a gum-covered pole, or sit on the dirty ground that countless shoes have trampled across. Despite my best insti... more
Hey, Women Have Opinions, Too
From: idealistnyc.wordpress.com
Post Date: 2008-10-08 12:54:38

A few days ago, I participated in a one-day seminar called How to Write to Change the World put on by Catherine Orenstein of the Op-Ed Project . Orenstein is an experienced writer and op-ed contributor who wants to see more women participating in opinion journalism. Orenstein told us that in the first few months of 2008, nine out of every ten op-ed pieces submitted to major national newspapers were written by men. Therefore, about the same amount (88 percent) of published op-e... more
“I’m Green!” Drinking from a Box
From: idealistnyc.wordpress.com

Saving the planet is easy! The New York Times had an interesting Op-Ed about some wineries switching to…boxes! And you thought it was bad enough when bottles started going screw top or using plastic . It seems packaging wine in a box instead of a bottles makes it lighter and easier to transport: Switching to wine in a box for the 97 percent of wines that are made to be consumed within a year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about two million tons, or the equivalent o... more
Reporting Back from the Youth Action Fair

On September 27, more than 200 young people and 20 organizations came together at the School of the Future in Manhattan for the Youth Action Fair, which Idealist put on with Do Something and Children for Children as part of the Service Nation Day of Action. Young people ranging in age from 8 to 25, many accompanied by parents or teachers, were invited to check out stations in several rooms of the school, where they could find out about volunteer opportunities, get resources for young chan... more
