For those of you who weren’t aware, West Virginia, the 41st-largest state in the United States, broke away from much larger Virginia in 1861, during the U.S. Civil War. It was in the mountain state Tuesday night, where West Virginia’s voters overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton 67 to 26 per cent over Democratic front-runner Barack Obama.
Obama only made one campaign stop in West Virginia, instead concentrating on November’s general election against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. However, the size of Clinton’s victory led some analysts to believe that the her campaign for the Democratic nomination is far from finished. “This race isn't over yet. Neither of us has the total delegates it takes to win,” Clinton told supporters . “I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance to make their voices heard.”
MSNBC affirms that Obama has 1,880 delegates while Clinton's has earned 1,718, wi...

This is a bipartisan plea. Can we stop with the scions of powerful families grabbing vacant positions for themselves? That means no Jeb Bush, who is considering a run for a Florida Senate seat ; it means no Caroline Kennedy, who is apparently a contender to fill Hillary Clinton’s New York Senate seat ; and frankly, it also means no Terry McAuliffe, the Clintons’ close confidant and former money man who is weighing a run for governor of Virginia despite being from New York state.... more
We’ll get to Bob’s letter, that’s in response to a local newspaper article in a minute. But first, you need to look at the picture below. It’s a photo H.O.R.N. friend, Kid_A, took of Kayford Mountain, or what’s left of it, in West Virginia. This picture would never have been possible, and you would not have been able to see the sun setting that low in the sky from this vantage point, had the wonderful coal companies not blown the mountains the hell out of the way... more
Here’s a green idea we should enact right here in W.Va. We don’t need to wait for the federal government to act, we can start prioritizing our state dollars on this immediately: Greening the School House .

A recent independent audit of the West Virginia Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority showed that turnpike revenue was down 2.8 percent during a 12-month period ending in June. Revenue declined from $58.2 million the year before to $56.6 million, auditors reported. Toll revenue in 2006 totaled $61.9 million.

Although the presidential elections in the US do not generate as many reactions as the French elections in Madagascar, the intrigue surrounding the democratic party's nomination provoked plenty of reactions on the Malagasy blogosphere. Seven posts, mostly centered around the Barack Obama phenomenon, in the past month led to 116 comments.
Some Malagasies are convinced that Obama is able to implement the unity he promised, both in the US and on in the international scene.

From a report on the TV news show 60 Minutes, here is more evidence that the “secret Muslim” rumors are hurting Barack Obama among some sections of the voting public, by tapping into fear of “the Other” among less educated Americans. For background, see my earlier post on the subject, “ My Middle Name Is Hussein .”
To his credit, when Obama is asked about the rumors and denies them, he doesn’t just say they are insulting to him as a Christian. He also points out that they are ... more
A couple of months ago (and several times up til now) I registered my displeasure with the fact that the primary assumptions resulting in many of the failed policies of the Bush Administration (and indeed the previous one) were not being questioned in the primary presidential debates or even in the major forums for debate on foreign policy. The particulars of neo-conservative philosophy were... more
Canadian Parliament asks PM Questions People ask me why I care so much about US elections, especially those South of the border. This is currently on the Barack Obama You Tube page. Still don’t think America’s politics has any impact in Canada? This of course relates to the NAFTA story and Obama giving us the heads up in advance of the Ohio debate. For the record, I am unaware of any Canadian "right wing operatives" working for the Republicans, but I personally went up to C... more
