Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes conducts what appears to be the first joint interview with Senators Obama and Biden . The Democratic ticket responds to Obama’s nomination acceptance speech and to Senator McCain’s selection of Governor Sarah Palin as a running mate. Kroft (like many in the MSM) seems a bit in awe of Obama (he incorrectly opines that Palin is less experienced than Obama -- Palin has instituted reform ), and some of his questions strike me as irrelevant, but this 15-minute segment is nevertheless interesting: On a related note, CNN conducted a poll over the weekend (after the Gov. Palin announcement was made). They have Obama (49) - McCain (48) , just a one-point advantage over the dead tie they had on the eve of the democratic convention. The analysis: “The convention — and particularly Obama’s speech — seems to be well-received. And the selection of Sarah Palin as the GOP running mate, also se...

The Huffington Post / Blog - 10:11 am For many of us, 2008 will mark the last time we vote for a candidate who does not favor same-sex marriage. Sarah Palin wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving. The Huffington Post explains the occasion: On Thursday, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin appeared in Wasilla in order to pardon a local turkey in anticipation of Thanksgiving. This proved to be a slightly absurd but ultimately unremarkable event. But what came next was positively surreal. After the pardon Palin proceeded to do an interview with a local TV station while the turkeys were being SLAUGHTERED in the background!! Seemingly oblivious to ... more

Pickens is Campaigning for Energy Independence As the presidential campaign enters the home stretch, and the candidates continue hammering home their messages on the key issues of the day--among them, of course, energy independence and energy prices--it is easy to forget there’s another wealthy and influential person who is campaigning for American energy independence as well. Unlike Senators Obama and McCain, however, this person isn’t running for public office; rather, he ... more

John McCain is no friend of farmers

Coming from a long line of farmers in my home county of Barbour, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for American farm families. I know first hand how tough life can be for farmers and their families. That’s why Senator John McCain’s recent comments opposing the Farm Bill were so disturbing. McCain came out in strong opposition to the bill, saying “I don’t support agricultural subsidies no matter where they are. The farm bill, $300 billion, is something America simply can’t a... more

One day and night has passed for CRNC: Vegas. Top gossip so far: 1. “WestFest” was the big party of Friday night. The party was sponsored by Zach Howell, and was reportedly a tremendous success. One report estimated that more than 100 people attended throughout the night. 2. A CR mole reports that Ben Johnson has promised to appoint former Texas CR Chair Ryan Murphy as CRNC executive director in a Johnson administration. Either Johnson is buying off Texas, or in the words of Joh... more

Deborah Howell Takes On A Strawman, But Refuses to Make The Hard Calls Conservatives—keep hitting the MSM where it hurts: in the bank account Last week, Post Ombundswoman Deborah Howell “took on” the issue of media bias. I was underwhelmed, as were most of you (I suspect). IIRC, the job of the ombundsman is to hold people inside one’s own organization to account. To point fingers and assign blame. Howell doesn’t do this. I submit that she wrote... more

I previously mentioned my upcoming exegesis paper on Galatians, as part of my intensive course in a few weeks. Well, no sooner had I chosen Galatians 3:10-14 as my passage as a classmate informed me that those verses are the most hotly contested in the entire book. Oh well. They seem to be crucial for the issue of how salvation by faith relates to works and the law. I found a very helpful article by Simon J. Gathercole, lecturer in New Testament at the University of Aberdeen. It is... more

My wife and I recently wrote on singleness in With One Voice . Our interest in the topic was rekindled with Pastor John Piper preaching a series of messages on marriage (with his last two sermons being more related to singleness). He also pointed to a provocative, exegetical study by Barry Danyluk. All of this got us thinking about whether there might be different kinds of adult single Christians in the church today. The following graph (I am an engineer) is the fruit ... more

I’ve been enjoying Sovereign Grace Music for about seven years now. I love how each song exhibits a distinctive blend of theological precision and musical excellence. I love how my affections are raised in proportion to spiritual truth being more clearly apprehended. I love how the centrality of the substitutionary death, burial, and resurrection of Christ on our behalf is set forth in various lyrics and melodies. The songs help me remember that just as I received Christ (i.... more
