In endorsing Obama, the group joined the ranks of the Sierra Club , the League of Conservation Voters , Friends of the Earth and others. In a statement, executive director Dena Mottola Jaborska said Obama had “publicly committed to fully addressing the pressing problem of global warming and moving the United States toward a new energy future. Offshore drilling in Alaska: Obama must slow the rush Guardian: Now that the presidential campaign is over and gasoline has — for the time being — fallen well below $3 a gallon, the chants of "Drill, Baby, Drill!" have died down. That is a welcome development, for during the campaign voters were lured by the siren’s song of offshore drilling and its supposed benefits, while hearing virtually nothing about its costs. But the truth is that the environmental price of offshore... more

The Highlands Regional Master Plan passed today . If Gov. Corzine green-lights it next week, the document will shape what happens in the 850,000-plus acre region — a critically important water source — in the years to come. The Highlands Council was split on the plan, voting 9 to 5 to adopt it in a meeting that lasted more than seven hours. Amendments that were backed by environmentalists got mostly scrapped or weakened , according to the Star-Ledger, leaving many disappointed... more

At Rowan, wind was the popular kid. Nuclear was the creepy guy lurking in the corner. The last scheduled public hearing on the state’s Energy Master Plan took place yesterday at Rowan University . Some commenters pressed for solar and wind power and were against nuclear power, according to the Bridgeton News. Proponents of a new nuclear reactor, which would likely be built in Salem County (if it were built at all), said nuclear is necessary to meet Gov. Corzine’s ... more

No one knows what caused dozens of people to get sick today in a Newark apartment building. City officials believe the illnesses may be linked to pests in the building — bedbugs, fleas and mice — or someone’s efforts to exterminate them. Thirty-eight people were hospitalized, suffering from problems like puffy, irritated eyes, lightheadedness, irritated skin and sore throats. We hope the source is found soon, and fixed. ... more

Image via wildlifemanagementpro.com . Legislators yesterday demanded state environmental officials say how many bears are roaming around New Jersey. State Sen. Steven Oroho, Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose and Assemblman Gary Chiusano want the state to be more aggressive in its bear management and give its best guess of the bear population. But the DEP said yesterday it doesn’t have statewide numbers. What it has is a “study area” estimate — the number o... more
