City Utilities wants to raise your natural gas rates again .
This increase is in their budget proposal to the City Council. This new budget is 8.7% higher than their current budget. The proposal also includes previously approved increase in bus fares (ten cents for adults and youths, five for disabled and elderly riders) and a water rate increase.
As you may remember, in April CU wanted to raise natural gas rates 4.1% which meant according to CU an increase of $3.91 a month to the “average” customer. At the time, they boasted that CU rates were 20% below the state average. (That’s when I found the average income for this area is 27% below the state average…) They also said that part of the reason for the increase was that customers were conserving more energy…which in common sense language says that they’re punishing customers for using less of their product to try and make their family budgets.
