Not too close to the end of his term, but no doubt later than the oil men who helped put him in office would have liked, George Bush has paid back his family’s industry friends by trying to give them their own country.
The equation could not be more clear: we spend 4,100 lives, the health of another 30,000 soldiers, and over $500 billion, much of it funneled to companies tied to the Bush family and their friends, and in return Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP get four no-bid contracts to control the second-largest pool of oil in the world. The only surprising detail is the inclusion of Total, a French company, as one of the Big Four over Chevron and Conoco, the other U.S. supermajors ... but those guys are in there too, in a smaller role.
Why are these contracts no-bid? The article doesn’t say -- doesn’t even speculate -- but it seems as likely to me as the reason for Halliburton’s no-bid contracts to help run the war: Bush wants to help his friends as ...

States that allow...
