[ Mr. Wright / Flickr] This is a brief step back to the meta: a look at webby aspects of the campaign. Abhi lives in North Dakota. He reminisced recently that the 2004 Democratic National Convention inspired him to create Sepia Mutiny , a South Asian American group blog. This is part of the email he wrote back in 2004 to other South Asian bloggers to float the idea (hat tip to volunteer curator Roshan Abraham ): This past week with the Democratic Convention in the news, and all the talk of the bloggers that have been invited and how much power they seem to have, it got me thinking how there is no widely read news/issues/discussion/politics/random musings source target for South Asian Americans on the web. […] I was thinking “what if” all the most widely read South Asian American bloggers joined forces somehow and created a superblog […] This could be the definitive source for South Asian issues / news / opinion / culture / entertainment etc. ...

Immigrant Acts: On Asian American Cultural Politics
From: citeulike.org
Post Date: 2008-10-28 08:39:09

In _Immigrant Acts_, Lisa Lowe argues that understanding Asian immigration to the United States is fundamental to understanding the racialized economic and political foundations of the nation. Lowe discusses the contradictions whereby Asians have been included in the workplaces and markets of the U.S. nation- state, yet, through exclusion laws and bars from citizenship, have been distanced from the terrain of national culture. Lowe argues that a national memory haunts the conception of Asian... more

From: pinoybusiness.org
Post Date: 2008-10-28 10:14:46

In a landmark election that will go down the history books as a first whatever its outcome will be, Republican presidential candidate McCain has found support among Asian Americans, despite the fact that Democratic candidate Obama has a background similar to theirs. Filipino Tove Ann Purificacion of Vallejo supports McCain due to his and his running mate’s pro-life stance as one of the main factors in her support and lauds the former prisoner of war’s military service. It appears that v... more

Obama Makes Closing Argument in Virginia
From: electionbid2008.com
Post Date: 2008-11-03 22:27:34

Amy Chozick reports on the presidential race from Manassas, Va. Barack Obama made a final closing argument Monday night at the last rally of his twenty-two-month candidacy. ?The change we seek will not just come from government alone, it?s going to have to come from each of us,? Obama told the crowd of over 90,000. ?Each of us has a role to play.? He used his standard stump speech but also reflected on the campaign he?s run. ?Our campaign hasn?t been perfect,? he said. ?But we?ve go... more

Obama and Open Source Politics

[ mattkeefe / Flickr] Here’s another perspective on technology and Campaign 08. Scott Chacon is a Bay Area computer programmer with an abiding interest in “open source politics” — which he defines as “the idea that openness and transparency through technology can improve our political system.” He put that idea to the test in his own 2006 bid for a Congressional seat; he didn’t win, but he learned some things. In this 2008 campaign, Chaco... more
Farewell, Fair Tax

[ trialkat / Flickr] This picture by trialkat was taken at a Fair Tax rally in Jacksonville, FL, where Mike Huckabee played his bass. The boy is holding a dollar bill autographed by Huckabee, and the photo seemed a fitting adieu to the candidate, who, after last night’s primaries, conceded the GOP nomination to John McCain. This leaves all hopes of abolishing the IRS in the hands of Ron Paul . It also saddles Ron Paul with responsibility for the evolution/creation debate... more

The sidewalks were so slick from the freezing rain, that I walked in the street. Our polling place w... more

Post Date: 2008-03-05 13:21:21

A Vermonter and self-described “housewife and homeschooling mom” had this to say last night after watching the Vermont primary results on TV: On the Channel 17 exit interviews, when asked what comment she would write on her ballot for her elected officials, if she could, one woman said, “I would tell them to get out of Iraq and try to do something with the economy.” Funny, it is the exact opposite for me. I would tell them to get out of the economy and try to do something ... more
