This article where scientist discover an area of the brain which rewards a sense of adventure made me think about discussions I’ve had with non-campers about backpacking. It does seem kind of silly to strap a bunch of stuff on your back and head out to live in the woods for a while. The reward is seeing what is around the next bend in the path or finding the perfect spot for the night. It’s funny what some people say like they couldn’t go that long without a shower. We shower regularly when we camp and except for forgoing cold beer or fresh milk, we really don’t rough it. I suppose surviving an occasional scary moment just adds to the sense of adventure. Once we surprised a rather large black bear while hiking on an old logging road which was overgrown with chest high brush. The bear stood up about 30 feet away from us and there was a moment where we just looked at each other. Then it disappeared into the brush snorting and moving quickly. Once we realized it wa...

My friend Dan posted this link to the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change in a comment recently. Here is a quote; Only 27 percent believed “the current state of scientific knowledge is able to provide reasonable predictions of climate variability on time scales of 100 years.” No one disputes atmospheric carbon dioxide, (CO2), levels are rising. Nobody disputes we are dumping tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. So what is the point? Let’s change the atmosphere and see ... more

It’s been a busy week, but I wanted to make a quick post. I’ve spent a lot of the week wrapped in a blanket trying to stay warm. No, I haven’t had heater problems, I’m just cold. That’s one of the reasons I was really impressed by this video on 20/20 about a guy who climbed Mount Everest in shorts. He is called the iceman and he is highly resistant to cold, the total opposite of me. Here is an article too. Most of the show was about medical problems. I did not know ... more

I’m not really sure what year it was, sometime in the late sixties. I was fishing on a lake in Canada with my family. The sun sparkled on the clear water. It was a beautiful day. Our native guide reached into his bag and pulled out a cup. He dipped the cup into the lake, raised it to his lips, and began to drink. To me, he might as well have pulled a rabbit out of a hat, or a quarter from my nose. I was amazed. “You can drink the water?” I said. He just nodded. I grew up in no... more

Bill Foster is a physicist who won a special election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Politics are so strange I guess it’s not surprising that few scientists want to run for Congress. I suppose there is no reason to assume someone trained in math and logic would be a better Congressman than one who is not. On the other hand, it would be reassuring if people voting on important issues demonstrated some ability to think logically. Also, many issues are extremely technical in nature and... more
